Language Arts 6-3

Week of 2/21/12

This week we are working on using the UNRAVEL strategy for reading and some of our grammar skills.  We will be assessing what the students learned about Direct and Indirect Objects and we may be re-teaching that skill if students indicate that they still do not understand.  We are also introducing the skill of identifying predicate adjectives.

Students will have homework on Tuesday night (Using the UNRAVEL strategy on a reading passage) and Thursday (Identifying predicate adjectives).

Update

We were not able to  give out the homework assignment in most of the classes due to the lesson taking longer than first thought.  They will have reading homework to practice the UNRAVEL strategy next week.  Each student should have completed an UNRAVEL strategy guide this week.  It was done in the form of a flip book.  I have attached the power-point of the pages for the flip book.  Students will be receiving a grade on the flip book on Tuesday of next week.

Week of 2/13/12

We have finally finished our persuasive writing unit.  The students really enjoyed working with each other to prove the guilt or innocence of the Big Bad Wolf.  The groups did a great job and all came up with very sound arguments and support.  We had a great time during the court case and we were really proud of all the students who participated.

Starting tomorrow, the students will be learning the UNRAVEL reading strategy.  Students will be working on breaking down reading passages to assist them with comprehension.  Please review the power point that is attached to help encourage your student to use the strategy when reading at home.  We want the students to practice this strategy as much as possible so we can see gains in comprehension from all students!!

Students will be split up.  Ms. Renz will work on the UNRAVEL strategy while Ms. Deaux will be working with the students on identifying main idea, topic sentences and supporting details, as well as analyzing sentences to exclude extraneous and inappropriate information.  On the days the students work with Ms. Renz, they will have a reading homework assignment to practice the UNRAVEL strategy.  All students will be responsible for returning the homework on Friday 2/17/12.
