Note:  Just 30 minutes a day of reading for pleasure, will improve your reading skills.  

 

                            

Lexiles

Lexiles:  What they are and how to find them.

-       The lexile of a book/text indicates the level of difficulty a reader might have in comprehending at least 75% the contents. 

• All Cooper students have taken a reading comprehension test to determine their lexiles.  The test will be taken twice more this year to measure  improvement.
• The lexile range for a reader is a range of fifty points above or below their test score.
• To search for the lexile of a book, you can go to www.lexile.com/fab, where you can enter a lexile range and receive a reading suggestion, or enter a book’s title to find its lexile (not all books have been measured).

 Using the Cooper Media Center (from home, work, etc.) to search for books by lexile.       

 - At the Cooper homepage, click on the media center link at the top of the screen.

-      At the list of county media centers, click on Cooper.

-     At the media center’s Destiny homepage, click on Catalog.

-    At the search screen, pull down the menu at Reading Programs and click on Lexile.

-    Type the lexile range wanted, hit enter, and you will get a list of books in the Cooper library in that lexile.

-     To find the lexile of a book in the Cooper library, type the title or author  into the search bar.  If the book has a lexile, it will be on the catalog page which comes to screen 

February Book Fair

Just a "heads-up" that the Media Center will be hosing a winter book fair beginning about February 8th (depending upon the delivery truck)and continuing for a week.  Students will be able to win $2.00 gift certificates to use at the fair by answering questions about famous inventors, entrepreneurs, and literary noteables as part of Black History Month.

Some of the titles which will have special appeal to the students include:

     Whisper - the sequel to the Roar, in which an army of  childre revolt.       

    One Crazy Summer -  a Newberry Honor Book winner in which two young girls visit LA during the revolutionary 1960's.

    Two new books from the Bluford High series:  The Fallen  and Shattered.

    And new sequels in the Dork Diaries series, Big Nate series, Gordon Korman's Swindle characters and much more.
