Spring Break Assignments

Students have two parts to complete for the spring break assignment. Please see the vocabulary drill post for the other part of the assignment. Nonetheless, students were given "coach workbooks" on Thursday, April 3, 2008. They are to complete only the five CRCT reviews found at the end of several sets of lessons. There are explanations, examples, and lessons questions that may be useful along the way... but the CRCT review questions are what must be complete with work shown upon return to school for submission.

This assignment is worth 250 points. Please help make sure your student is working on this assignment over the break little by little rather than procrastinating. I have suggested one review per day for five days. They have also been given an opportunity to begin working in class with their learning teams on Thursday and watch review videos on Friday when we visited the multi-media labs. If you student asks to use the internet to do some review, please allow it. We have made a lot of progress especially using www.mathplayground.com. Thank you so much for your dedication to your student's future, and have a happy and safe break.

Vocabulary Drills

These are the vocabulary drills from weeks 1 -  5 that your student is to have practiced by the time he/she has completed the CRCT.

Over spring break, your student is to practice list 3 which is 7 words 7 times for 7 days (including one weekend). We will begin list 4 on Monday when students return to school. There will be a random test on list 3 on that Tuesday to determine whether or not the drills were indeed completed or not. A test grade will be assigned based on your student's performance.

Similarity & Geometry Study Guide

This is the assignment from today and the study guide that students may use to complete it. You MUST show your work for full credit.

Order of Operations Study Guide

As we get closer to CRCT, I have provided CRCT Review packets in class and will continue to put the related study guides online for access and printing from home. There are a limited number of printed copies available in class if you are not able to print from home. Please have your student request one.

Please ensure that your scholar is spending time on skillstutor (link is accessible from Cooper's homepage under administrator's picture) to continue to build skills. This is vital because practice outside of class is a vital part of your scholar's success. Please also note that the ENTIRE book (page for page) is also available online. If you need usernames or passwords, please ask your scholar as we have visited the lab several times. So, they should readily have this information. If by chance it is lost or forgotten information, please call me at home... I am able to get this for you after school hours as well. Please refer to my syllabus for my contact information.

Beginning of 3rd Quarter

Students have completed presentations of their holiday projects and did VERY well overall. I am cross-teaming with Language Arts to make sure writing deficiencies that came up while reviewing the written report are addressed as well.

Here are some files that will help with a successful beginning to this quarter... and please be on the lookout for your conference request. If you have not received one as of yet, please contact your student's homeroom teacher.

Holiday Projects

Students are to use their imaginations to complete both the "Pack Your Bags" and "Oldies But Goodies" holiday projects. If you need another copy, please print from the attached file.

Students have received their guidelines and some suggested points of inquiry to begin their journey toward completing these projects. As long as the basic guidelines are covered (especially showing how proportions and percents are used for "Pack Your Bags" and statistical representations are used for "Oldies but Goodies"), students will be graded based on the attached rubric.

I suggested that students use maps to decide on the country and the cities within them to which they want to travel. Although students have been given suggested ideas to explore, students may take a whole different perspective toward completing these projects. The following are questions posted in class to help stimulate "food for thought":

"PACK YOUR BAGS" - determining the cost (what is their currency?)

  • What do you need to travel outside the U.S. (your "country" may not be a U.S. state or territory)?
  • How will you get there?
  • How many places will you visit?
  • Where will you stay?
  • What will you eat?
  • What will you buy?
  • How much will it cost to bring those things back to the U.S.?

"OLDIES BUT GOODIES" - investor perspective or visitor perspective suggested

  • What type of museum is it? (must be your museum, not already in existence)
  • How many employees do you need to operate it?
  • How much does it cost to operate (utilities, fees, insurance, etc.)?
  • How much revenue do you expect?
  • What will it look like (layout of galleries/displays)?
  • Tours?
  • Hours of Operation?
  • Who will manage?
  • What is their experience?

If you would like to come to your student's presentation, please email me. Once we return and schedule presentations, I will let you know, via your student, the date and time of his/her presentation. If you have additional questions, please feel free to leave me a message. I will be traveling over the break, but I will call home to retrieve my messages on occasion. Thank you for your support in helping your 6th grader cross over to the big leagues! Happy Holidays!

Make Up for the Take Home Test

The make up for the take home test is a compilation of hands-on lab activities from the textbook which can also be found at http://my.hrw.com. All of my students have been to the lab and received instruction about how to get online and around on the online textbook. However, if you need this information again, please do not hesitate to contact me on Wednesday, Saturday, or Sunday as I will have access to their username and password. On Thursday and Friday, however, I will be out of town visiting with my family who temporarily do not have internet access and very bad cellular reception anyway. :)

Nonetheless, the specific pages were given in class today as follows: lab 5-2 on pages 232-233, lab 5-4 on pages 242-243, and lab 5-7 on pages 258-259... all in their entirety.

There is also a Holiday Packet that was sent home today, a total of 9 pages... but they should be a breeze to wiz right through. I suggested students begin asap rather than procrastinate... help me out on that one. In the event that your scholar has misplaced any of the handout for the holiday packet, here are the files for you to print. There are eight files with a total of nine pages to print.

We are working on Fractions

Here is an excellent file full of notes and exercises covering the vast world of fractions from adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators to the vocabulary it takes to understand this intricate and interesting array of information. It would benefit your scholar to have this information printed and placed in his/her handout section as it is a few pages long.
