The effects of human actions on the environment of Latin America.(01/17-20/2012)

The environmental problems affecting latin America and the Caribbean

• The Deforestation in the region
• The removal of top soil in search of Mineral resources in the region
• The pollution caused by industralization
• Pollution caused by Oil exploration in the region.

Students will be given their big geography project this week. The details will be sent home on thursday of this week.

The Geography of Latin America and the Caribbean ( 01/09--13/2012)

Welcome back to the 3rd Quarter of the school year.Hoping you had a wonderful Christmas and a good start to the New Year.

The focus this week will be on how the physical and Cultural geography shapes the environment, nations, and people of Latin America and the Caribbean.

Students will complete blank maps with selected features and political areas of the region.

The vocabulary words for this section are, latin america, deforestation, tropical zone, El nino, tributary, basin and strait

Video presentations will supplement the hands-on activities and analytic collaborative discourse that will be encouraged during class.

The Economy of Canada ( 12/19 - 22/11 )

This week we will focus on the Economy of Canada as it relates to the following areas:

• The type of Economy...Market
• Trading links through NAFTA
• Fishing off the Eastern and Western Coastlines
• Service and Manufacturing sectors
• Tourism

Students are given the opportunity to improve their grades during the next four days (12/19 - 22/11).

Conflict and Change (12/12 - 16/11)

This week we will be completing several important assessements.

• This Tuesday we will comlpete a Vocabulary Quiz...constitutional monarchy, extraction, acid rain, federation, citizens, trade, voluntary trade, great lakes, timber resources,investment and trading blocks.
• We will complete the second quarter Benchmark Test on the 12/16.
• Finally, we will continue to work on the conceptual framework ooutlined last week.
• This week we will review the material necessary to prepare our students for the Benchmark Test.

Study of Canada...(12/05....09/11)

We will focus on the Physical and Political features of Canada's Geography.     We will proceed to answer the following questions...

How has the Location of Canada influenced where most of the people live.

1. The existence of the Indegenious people...Inuits
2. The effects of Climate and population distribution in the southern landscape within 100 miles of the US border.
3. The Environmental problems in the Great Lake region.
4. The location of Natural Resources and the benefits to the people.

Students will complete a Vocabulary Quiz on Thursday (12/08)

Students can get the opportunity to make-up work they have missed in order to improve their grades shown on their progress report...There is still three plus weeks left in this quarter. STANDARD: European Exploration and Colonization of  regions of the World.

Students will be tested at the end of this week on the following topics:

• Major religions of Europe ( christanity, Judaism and Islam)
• Exploration and Colonization  of several regions of the world. 

Monday...What motivates the europeans to take great risk to explore unknown territories.

       (Gold, spices, natural resources, spreading of religious ideas, and setting up a colonial empire)

Tuesday...How did colonialization impacted economic development in Europe.

        ( Introduce more raw materials for industry and capital resources such as gold more jobs)

Wednesday...Prince Henry the Navigator's contribution to overseas exploration and imperialism

Thursday... The development of the imperial power structure as a result of colonization.    (Review for test)                      

WEEK OF 09/12 - 16/2011

MONDAY: Review the Three major environmental issues of Europe.

• Acid Rain in Germany and its neighbors
• Poor air quality in the United Kingdom
• Nuclear Disaster in Chernobyl, Ukraine

3rd WEEK...08/28 - 09/03/2011

This week we will be working on the GPS Standard : Compare and contrast the Location, Climate and Natural Resources of Russia, Italy, United Kingdom and Germany

• Strategies...use of the Frayers Model to define new concepts; the use of the Venn-diagram in collecting data for the countries in named above;  video presentation and other visuals
• Students will get a vocabulary quiz on 09/01...(Harbor, channel, peninsula, trade, natural resources,import, export, urban,rural and culture.) This will be in the form of a matching format.

 

WEEK # 2 (08/22--26/2011)

MONDAY

Students will focus on the factors used to Locate  places in Europe

• Imaginary lines  
• Cardinal Points
• Latitude
• Longitude       (A Quiz will be given on 08/24...Grid,Equator.Prime Meridian)

Students will create a flip chart using the 'Five Themes of Geography' as a class assignment

TUESDAY

Students will focus on locating 10 selected physical features  on a blank map of Europe.

WEDNESDAY  through Friday

Students will focus on....How physical geography affect the Culture, the geography and why people live in certain regions of Europe. Students will complete a map test with the 10 selected features of Europe on Friday
